Phaedra and Hippolytus. She tells Theseus that his wife's death was the fault of Aphrodite and the nurse's stratagems. As he was riding his chariot along the shore, Poseidon sent a great tidal wave, with terrifying water creatures to scare Hippolytus horses. As punishment, Aphrodite caused Hippolytus' stepmother Phaedra to fall in love . However, on his way out, he was mortally hurt. Euripides, Hippolytus. Aphrodite would not allow this insult. Unfortunately for the plays central character, Hippolytus, the goddess of love Aphrodite needed the young man to revere her, but he chose otherwise. At this point in the myth of Hippolytus, Euripides the playwright brings to life the story in his play named Hippolytus, written in 428 BCE. Suddenly, the goddess Artemis appears. When Theseus discovers Phaedra's accusations, he curses Hippolytus, who dies because of the curse. In the end Artemis tells Theseus the truth and Hippolytus forgives his father before he dies. Artemis goes on to say that despite his sins, Theseus may yet receive pardon because the blame ultimately rests with Aphrodite.
